World Bank does not plan to offer new financing to Sri Lanka until policies in place

COLOMBO (News 1st); The World Bank said that it is concerned for the people of Sri Lanka and are working in coordination with the IMF and other development partners in advising on appropriate policies to restore economic stability and broad-based growth.Until an adequate macroeconomic policy framework is in place, the World Bank does not plan to offer new financing to Sri Lanka.“Recent media reports have inaccurately stated that the World Bank is planning support for Sri Lanka in the form of a bridge loan or new loan commitments, among other incorrect assertions,” said the World Bank.It added that it is currently repurposing resources from previously approved projects to help the government with some essential medicines, temporary cash transfers for poor and vulnerable households, school meals for children of vulnerable families, and support for farmers and small businesses. .

Sri Lanka Navy deploys 13 flood relief teams; transports students facing O/L exam by boat
COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Navy has deployed 13 relief teams in flood-risk areas in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Southern Provinces as of this morning (01st June 2022), to provide relief to the flood victims following the inclement weather prevailing in the island.The Navy teams have been engaged in flood relief duties as people have faced hardships after certain low-lying areas in the Rathnapura, Kalutara and Galle Districts are vulnerable to flood threat, with heavy downpour received by watersheds in river basins of Kalu and Gin.Accordingly, the Western Naval Command has sent relief teams to Paragoda, Baduraliya, Bulathsinhala and Pelawatta areas in the Kalutara District as well as town of Rathnapura, Delgoda, Ayagama and Muwagama areas in the Rathnapura District.Similarly, the Southern Naval Command has rushed flood relief teams to Thawalama, Hiniduma, Nagoda and Mapalagama areas in the Galle District.Since this morning (01st June) naval personnel are providing relief to flood victims, including school children who are sitting for the GCE Ordinary Level Examination, as Paragoda and Kudaligama areas in Kalutara and Hiniduma in Galle have experienced minor floods.In addition, the Navy has kept on standby 25 flood relief teams in the Western Naval Command, 05 teams in the Southern Naval Command and 10 more teams in the Northwestern Naval Command for prompt deployment.

COLOMBO (News 1st); A Sri Lankan court has granted Police permission to detain and interrogate for two days the main suspects in the murder of a nine-year-old girl from Atalugama, Bandaragama.Police Spokesperson Attorney-at-Law & SSP Nihal Thalduwa told News 1st that the victim was NOT subject to any sexual abuse.Three Judicial Medical Officers conducted the post-mortem as per the order by the court, said the Police Spokesperson.“The JMOs believe that she died of dry drowning, where water and mud entered her body and lungs through the nose and mouth,” he said adding that the suspect was arrested on Sunday (29) night by the Kalutara and Panadura Crimes Divisions.The Police Spokesperson said that the 29-year-old suspect who is a father of three was living close to the victim’s house and was somewhat a relative of the deceased.“Police is also investigating to determine if he was addicted to drugs,” he said.The Police Spokesperson said the suspect had waited for the girl to return from the shop and taken her away to the crime scene and had killed her as the girl could reveal what happened if she returned home.Sri Lanka Police is conducting further investigations to determine how the murder took place.The Police Spokesperson also said that when the relatives discovered the body of the victim, the suspect had moved about among the crowd not to draw any suspicion on him.Fathima Aisha (9) had left home on the 27th of May 2022 to a shop located not more than 500m from her home to buy chicken.However, she never returned home and her parents and neighbours thereafter alerted the police of her disappearance.Her body was discovered in a marshy land the following day (28) by locals.

COLOMBO (News 1st); Investigations into the shooting at Bastian Mawatha in Pettah on Monday (30) afternoon have been handed over to the Colombo Crimes Division.Sri Lanka Police said that statements have been recorded from three people regarding the incident.One person was killed and another was injured in a shooting near the Private Bus Terminal at Bastian Mawatha, Colombo.Police investigations revealed that the man who was gunned down at Bastian Mawatha, Colombo on Monday (30) morning had attended a court hearing at the Hultsdorf Court with three others before he was targeted by two masked gunmen.Police Spokesperson & Attorney-at-Law SSP Nihal Thalduwa speaking to News 1st following the hearing, the four men had exited the court and one of them had left in a motorcycle.“Thereafter, the three other men had proceeded on foot to the Bastian Mawatha Private Bus Terminal to catch a bus to their respective destinations,” said the Police Spokesperson.It was at this time that two masked men in a motorcycle had reached them and opened fire at them with a T-56 Assault Rifle, said the SSP, adding that 10 bullets were fired at the three men.One of the men died and another was injured in the daylight shooting.Police Spokesperson & Attorney-at-Law SSP Nihal Thalduwa speaking to News 1st said the deceased was a 30-year-old from Mahailuppallama and the injured man was a 30-year-old from Galle.“Another person from Guruthalawa was with the victim and the injured man.

COLOMBO (News 1st); Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has proposed for the appointment of 15 Finance and Monitoring Committees to resolve the economic crisis.The Prime Minister in a special statement on Sunday (29) evening pointed out that there are currently two issues in the political arena; one being the re-implementation of the 19th Amendment, and the second being the abolition of the Executive Presidency.“The period and methodology of these two steps can be decided by the party leaders,” he stated.The Prime Minister further stated that a common allegation is that the Parliament has not taken steps to solve the economic crisis, and he noted that this was mainly due to the Executive having more power, and a weakened parliament.Therefore, the Prime Minister said that the proposed 21st Amendment increases the powers of Parliament, however stated that it alone will not be satisfactory. He also said that the current monetary rules must be amended.Pointing out that they have to take Government revenue to between 18% and 20% of GDP in the next decade, the Prime Minister said that a special Committee on Strategies and Procedures will be appointed for this purpose.Accordingly, these will be the committees that propose measures to increase the revenue of the Government, he mentioned.The Prime Minister proposed a Committee on Banking and Financial Services.

Launch a public-private partnership program on food security- President
COLOMBO (News 1st); President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has instructed officials to immediately launch a comprehensive public-private partnership program on food security.In a tweet, the President’s Spokesperson stated that negotiations with several countries to meet the fertilizer requirement have been successful, and therefore, the President requested all farmers not to give up cultivation during the Yala season due to shortage of fertilizer or any other reason.The President made this observation at a discussion held at the President’s House in Fort today (30) with regard to the agricultural activities of the Yala season and the mitigation of possible food shortages in the future.The President has also stated that the full involvement of the Ministry of Agriculture should be given to carry out cultivation activities using chemical or organic fertilizers as per the choice of the farmers.The President urged all farmers not to give up cultivation during the Yala season due to shortage of fertilizer or any other reason as the discussions with several countries were successful in meeting the fertilizer requirement.The President has also pointed out that a national fertilizer policy should be formulated soon, which will include policies for importing, distributing, proper management, awareness raising and coordination among farmers and officials with regard to fertilizer.The discussion has focused on identifying paddy fields that were not used for Yala cultivation and cultivating essential crops such as green gram, cowpea and soya, which could enable farmers to earn a higher income.The President has instructed to take immediate steps to release the Kandakadu farm belonging to the National Livestock Development Board for cultivation
