The 23 areas of England where cases of the Indian Covid variant are now the dominant strain have been laid bare in the latest official data.
A full list of places where the strain is taking the lead in new infections in the period May 2-8 is contained in a Public Health England (PHE) technical briefing.
The report presented to SAGE identifies virus hotspots, with Bolton in Greater Manchester, Blackburn with Darwen in Lancashire, Sefton in Merseyside and Bedford, Bedfordshire leading the tables as authorities target the locations with surge testing.
The most recent publicly available figures show 350 cases in Bolton where the variant makes up 86.6% of cases, 100 in Blackburn with Darwen where it makes up 110 (85.9%), 105 in Sefton (90.5%)
