Street named after David Bowie to be unveiled in Paris next week – but the UK doesn’t have one
David Bowie is set to be opened next week – meaning France will have a street to honour the musician, while his home country of the UK does not.News that the French capital would be naming a street after the iconic singer was first shared back in 2020, when Mayor Jérôme Coumet – a professed fan of Bowie – revealed that he was planning the move. Now, the street is set to open next Monday (January 8), and will be a new road near Austerlitz train station, rather than a pre-existing one that has been renamed.According to Coumet, the idea for the “rue David Bowie” emerged as the “Space Oddity” singer had “a strong link with the city of lights” (via The Connexion). An inauguration party is also set to be held at Salle des Fetes that same day to celebrate the launch, and a variety of photographs and paintings related to the singer will be showcased at the Galerie Athéna until January 14.As highlighted by The Connexion, Bowie’s ties to France not only include his countless shows across the country, but also his time recording music at the legendary Miraval studio – which is now owned by Brad Pitt. While his home country of the UK does not yet have a street named after the late music legend, his birthplace of Brixton does have a famous mural of the singer, painted by Australian artist James Cochran.Bowie died in 2016, following a cancer diagnosis. In other news about David Bowie, back in November it was reported that the artist’s handwritten lyric sheet has been estimated to fetch up to £100,000 at auction. The documents contained the late singer’s corrections, drafts and notes to his tracks ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide’ and ‘Suffragette City’.

Listen to The Last Dinner Party’s empowering new single ‘Caesar On A TV Screen’
The Last Dinner Party have dropped a theatrical new single, titled ‘Caesar On A TV Screen’. Check it out below.Shared earlier today (January 4), the new track precedes the release of the forthcoming debut album, ‘Prelude To Ecstasy’, and sees the indie five-piece channel inspiration from one of Shakespeare’s tragedies.Their first new music of 2024, ‘Caesar On A TV Screen’ captures the same charisma that first put the band on the map – with a blend of rock and pop touches and a colourful sense of theatricality.“Just for a second, I can be one of the greats/ I’ll be Caesar on a TV screen, Champion of my fate/ No one can tell me to stop, I’ll have everything I want/ Anyone and everyone will like me then,” frontwoman Abigail Morris sings in the chorus, as the band channel their inner Shakespearean actors for the music video.Check out the track below. The new track arrives ahead of The Last Dinner Party’s long-awaited debut album, ‘Prelude To Ecstasy’ (pre-order/pre-save here).Set to arrive on February 2 via Island Records, the much-hyped London band and NME 100 alumni first teased their first LP last year, and it’ll also feature previously shared singles ‘Nothing Matters’, ‘Sinner’, ‘My Lady Of Mercy’ and ‘On Your Side’.“Ecstasy is a pendulum which swings between the extremes of human emotion, from the ecstasy of passion to the sublimity of pain, and it is this concept which binds our album together,” the band said of the new album.“This is an archeology of ourselves; you can exhume our collective and individual experiences and influences from within its fabric.

Glastonbury Festival 2023: Arctic Monkeys play career-spanning headline set as Alex Turner bounces back to health
Arctic Monkeys performed a career-spanning headline set at Glastonbury Festival today (June 23) as Alex Turner made it to the stage just days after illness threatened to cancel their headline slot.Earlier this week, the band announced the cancellation of their Dublin show that was scheduled for Tuesday after Turner, who had been suffering from an acute case of laryngitis, was instructed to rest, leaving their return to Worthy Farm up in the air.Emily Eavis then shared that she was confident Arctic Monkeys would play Glastonbury, but that they “have a couple of back-up plans”.Today, though, the news everyone was hoping for was confirmed: Arctic Monkeys’ headline set would go ahead.Turner and his well-rested pipes were on strong form throughout the set – for which he donned his trademark suit and shades – which saw the Sheffield indie rockers kick off with ‘Sculptures of Anything Goes’.Other tracks given a Worthy Farm outing included ‘Cornerstone’, ‘Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?’, ‘Arabella’, ‘Mardy Bum’, ‘There’d Better Be A Mirrorball’, ‘505’ and many more.“The Monkeys are back on the farm!” Turner proclaimed to the huge crowd.Today marked the band’s third time headlining Glastonbury, with their previous performances taking place back in 2007 and 2013.‘Body Paint’ from newest album ‘The Car‘ saw Turner and co. deliver a wildly electric faux set closer with an extended outro, before the band returned for an encore of ‘I Wanna Be Yours’, ‘I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor’ and ‘R U Mine?’.Fans reacted enthusiastically to the band’s energetic performance, while others were more divided on Turner’s distinctive style of showmanship.

The Strokes have been forced to cancel or postpone some of their ongoing tour dates due to a positive COVID-19 test.In a statement posted to Instagram, The Strokes confirmed there had been a positive COVID-19 test in their camp and that their gigs tonight (May 28) and Monday (May 30) would be affected. They wrote: “Due to a positive Covid case in The Strokes, we must regretfully cancel tomorrow night’s appearance at Boston Calling.“We are incredibly sorry and we will do our best to get back to Boston soon.”A post shared by Julian Casablancas (@minorbutmajor)They have also postponed a concert they were meant to deliver on Monday May 30 in support of congressional candidate Kina Collins. The band were due to play an intimate gig in Chicago in support of Collins, who is running for Congress in the upcoming primaries, which take place on June 28, representing Illinois’ 7th District. For this gig, fans are being advised to hold on to tickets while they work towards rescheduling the date.“Kina Collins has lived the challenges on the ground in IL-7 and she’s exactly the kind of non-corporate, good-hearted, progressive-minded leader the world needs in these corrupt times,” the band’s frontman Julian Casablancas said recently.“In a system dominated by super-pacs and profit-fueled political machines, Kina is rejecting all that, and choosing to fight for people’s actual needs and desires.”Collins added: “We are so excited to have The Strokes coming to Chicago to help our campaign reach a new level of momentum in the final stretch before election day on June 28.

Happy Mondays’ Bez tests positive for COVID after ‘Dancing On Ice’ debut: “I’m gutted”
Bez has tested positive for COVID after making his debut appearance on Dancing On Ice on Sunday (January 16).The Happy Mondays member took to the rink in episode one of the ITV show’s 14th series, which saw him skate to his band’s classic single ‘Step On’ alongside professional partner Angela Egan.Yesterday (January 17) Bez – real name Mark Berry – confirmed to the Daily Star that he’s since “had a positive test”.“I’m gutted because I’m going to be missing training but I’m looking forward to skating on the show again for week three,” he said, “and I’ll be tuning at home and cheering on my mates who are skating this weekend.”In a statement, an ITV spokesperson said: “We have stringent protocols in place to ensure the health and safety of all our contributors and staff which are routinely monitored and updated to reflect the current guidelines.”Bez was hospitalised with COVID in 2020, a full week before it was announced as a pandemic. Last summer he explained that he “seriously thought [he] was going to die” as a result of the virus, saying he “couldn’t breathe”.The Dancing On Ice judging panel scored Bez and Egan 12.5 points out of a possible 40, though the pair’s performance was a hit with viewers.Bez wore full protective gear, including a helmet designed to look like a melon – a nod to the iconic ‘Step On’ line “You’re twistin’ my melon, man”.A pair of giant maracas were displayed at the back of the ice rink, while dancers dressed as slices of watermelon joined the pair later in the performance.
