Mt. Sakurajima, an active volcano which just had an explosive eruption spewing volcanic ash 5,000 meters into the sky on Jul TOKYO (AP) - A volcano on Japan’s main southern island of Kyushu erupted Sunday night, spewing ash and rocks.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries in nearby towns but residents were advised to evacuate.Japan’s Meteorological Agency said Sakurajima volcano erupted at around 8:05 p.m., blowing off large rocks as far as 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) away in the southern prefecture of Kagoshima.Footage on Japan’s NHK public television showed orange flames flashing near the crater and dark smoke of ash billowing from the mountaintop high up into the night sky."We will put the people’s lives first and do our utmost to assess the situation and respond to any emergency," Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihiko Isozaki told reporters.

He called on residents in the area to pay close attention to the latest update from the local authorities to protect their lives.The agency said it has raised the eruption alert to the highest level of five and about 120 residents in two towns facing the volcano were advised to leave their homes.The agency warned of falling volcanic rocks in areas within 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) of the crater and possible flow of lava, ash and searing gas within 2 kilometers (1.2 miles).Sakurajima, about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) southwest of Tokyo, is one of the most active volcanos in Japan and has repeatedly erupted.

Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway gave fans an update on her husband's health on Thursday's (August 18) show.Derek Draper has had a series of health issues after he was left "fighting for his life" when he contracted covid-19 in 2020.Last month he was rushed back to the hospital with sepsis.READ MORE: Peter Andre leads support for GMB's Kate Garraway after Derek Draper rushed to hospitalThe update came as Kate was interviewing the rail union boss Mick Lynch on the upcoming strikes.She told him about the experiences she had with rail staff and staff shortages, despite praising their high levels of service.She explained: "I spend pretty much all of my time on trains, or in hospital with Derek."Earlier this month, Kate said: "The sepsis is under control. One kidney is looking really good, just need to look at the other one."We’re back on the right side of it now."At the time Kate also praised the doctors for their amazing work and thanked fans for their positive messages.She said: "It’s lovely to be back and thank you for all your good wishes as always, it means everything."Derek fell into a coma after catching covid in 2020 and became the country's longest suffering covid patient following a 13-month stint in hospital.Last April, he was able to go back home with Kate and their two children - 16-year-old Darcey and 12-year-old Billy - and had been receiving 24-hour care.However he has been in and out of hospital since and he fell "really unwell" again on July 9.
