COLOMBO (News 1st) – Sri Lanka Police fired tear gas in Mullaithivu on Wednesday (5) to prevent a brawl from taking place  between two groups of fishermen.Fishermen from Mullaithivu have been protesting opposite the Mullaithivu Fisheries Office for three days citing several demands including a ban on illegal fishing methods and the transfer of corrupt officials.While this protest was taking place, another group marched in protest from the Mullaithivu Bus Terminal demanding that a certain type fishing net locally known as the 'Surukku Dela' be permitted to be used for fishing, though it has been banned in Sri Lanka.The group then attempted to march towards the Mullaithivu Fisheries Office.Despite Sri Lanka Police attempting to prevent them marching ahead, the group broke through and Sri Lanla Police were forced to fire tear gas to disperse the crowd.After tear gas was fired, the fishermen who demanded permission to use the banned fishing net protested opposite the Mullaithivu District Secretariat.They handed over a letter to the Mullaithivu District Secretary, and thereafter with Police and Military protection handed over a letter to the Mullaithivu Fisheries Department as well.The group thereafter moved away, however, the fishermen who want to ban the use of the said nets continued with their protest.

PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Police Department has released new surveillance images showing the suspects wanted in a deadly ambush near Roxborough High School last week. This comes one day after police released the name and image of a teenage suspect wanted in connection with the deadly shooting, which left one football player dead and four other teens injured on the 300 block of Fairway Terrace on the afternoon of September 27. PREVIOUS: Teen wanted for murder in deadly ambush shooting near Roxborough High School, police sayPolice say they found four teens, including two 14-year-olds, suffering from gunshot wounds. PHILADELPHIA - Authorities are investigating a shooting that left a woman hospitalized early Wednesday morning. According to police, the shooting occurred just before 12:30 a.m.Responding officers from the 19th District were called to the 5300 block of Girard Avenue and found a woman lying on the sidewalk on the 600 block of North Peach Street, police say. The woman was bleeding heavily from a gunshot wound to the thigh, Chief Inspector Scott Small said. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESOfficials say police took her to a Presbyterian Hospital, where she is in critical condition and undergoing surgery. Small says the woman is considered a Jane Doe and believed to be in her early 30s. According to investigators, 10 spent shell casings were found on the sidewalk and front of a residence on Girard Avenue. Police say investigators believe someone fired the 10 shots southbound from Girard Avenue onto Peach Street. This is a developing story.

PHILADELPHIA - A man has died after he was shot in the neck in Philadelphia, authorities say. According to police, officers responded to Ogontz and Stenton Avenues just before 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Officials say responding officers found a man walking in the area bleeding heavily from a gunshot wound to his neck. Witnesses told authorities that the man got out of a Buick Sedan traveling northbound on Ogontz Avenue that stopped at the intersection, and Good Samaritans rushed to try and assist him, according to Chief Inspector Scott Small. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESPolice transported the man to Einstein Medical Center, where he was placed in critical condition and underwent surgery, Small says. Authorities say he did not survive and later died. According to Small, the Buick Sedan is still parked at the crime scene and there is blood in the driver's seat. Investigators say they are not sure if the man was driving the vehicle or driven to the location, but authorities do not believe the shooting happened in the area.

LOS ANGELES - Consumers who are sick of the ongoing impacts of inflation are soon to experience a bit of relief following an announcement from Nike which plans to liquidate some of it's products following a recent flood of inventory. According to a report by The New York Post, Nike said it's planning to offer sales of up to 44% overall and 65% in North America, the company as it reported for its latest quarter last week. The company is blaming supply chain issues for a lag in product movement which resulted in the company overstocking some items while others arrived late. "We effectively have a few seasons landing in the marketplace at the same time," chief financial officer Matt Friend said on an earnings call with analysts on Thursday, adding that some of that inventory is now "seasonally out of relevance" and will be cleared out more quickly to make room for the "newest and best inventory."  So what does this mean for shoppers? Big discounts, and just in time for the holidays. There are three factors that could lead to inflation which include demand-pull inflation, cost-push inflation and built-in inflation.Nike wants to get rid of excess products sitting on its shelves and fast. Many sneakerheads have noted a variety of Jordan shoes and other Nike shoes that normally sell out quickly, collecting dust on shelves. Photos of these normally highly sought after shoes were posted on social media in an attempt to show the impacts of the ongoing economic downturn.
