BOSTON - A new study finds that increased green spaces in cities could benefit a person’s health and subsequently reduce mortality rates among older adults. According to the study, published earlier this month in "Frontiers in Public Health," researchers found that between 34,000-38,000 deaths in people 65 and older could have been reduced between 2000 to 2019 if "greenness" increased by 0.1 units in U.S. metropolitan areas.In addition, approximately 15 to 20 deaths per 10,000 people in the age group could be reduced with an increase in vegetation.Researchers at Harvard and Boston University’s School of Public Health focused their analysis on 35 metropolitan cities, along with people aged 65 and older in order to more easily quantify the potential reductions in mortality in a generally vulnerable population.For the study, the team utilized publicly available population data from the U.S.

KENSINGTON - Philadelphia police are investigating a double shooting in the city’s Kensington neighborhood, that critically injured one man.Officials say police responded to the 3400 block of Kip Street Thursday afternoon, about 2:15, on the report of gunfire.Officers arrived to find a 32-year-old man shot four times. Carranza said the officers did not go in.Javier Cazares, whose fourth grade daughter, Jacklyn Cazares, was killed in the attack, said he raced to the school when he heard about the shooting, arriving while police were still gathered outside the building.Upset that police were not moving in, he raised the idea of charging into the school with several other bystanders."Let’s just rush in because the cops aren’t doing anything like they are supposed to," he said.

PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia police are investigating a crash that left a nine-year-old dead and a mother and another child injured. According to authorities, the crash happened in the area of Germantown and Erie Avenues just before 11:30 p.m. Chief Inspector Scott Small says officers with the 25th District and paramedics responded to the scene and found a 2017 Honda Sedan that crashed into the back of a parked unattended minibus. The Honda, with three females inside, sustained heavy damage to the front of the vehicle, Small says. Police are investigating a crash in North Philadelphia at Germantown and Erie Avenues.  Authorities say the driver, a 33-year-old woman, was transported to Temple Hospital with injuries to the face and a possible broken leg. The driver's two daughters, a seven-year-old and nine-year-old, were also in the car, according to police. Police say the two girls were transported to Saint Christopher's. The seven-year-old child is in stable condition with bumps and bruises, but the nine-year-old was pronounced dead at 11:50 p.m., Small says. Police are investigating the cause of the crash, but believe the Honda was traveling eastbound on the 1300 block of Erie Avenue. Authorities said accident investigators are processing the scene and parts of the Honda were found 100 feet west that are believed to have ended up there before the car crashed. Small says there is no evidence the driver was impaired at this time, but they believe the Honda may have been traveling at a high rate of speed. AdvertisementThis is a developing story.

NEWARK, Del. - Authorities in Delaware arrested an armed man who they say caused a stand-off with officers in the parking lot of an army reserve facility Wednesday morning.Officers from the Newark Police Department were dispatched to the U.S. Army Reserve Training Center on Ogletown Road after a 911 caller reported an armed man in the rear parking lot, authorities said. The caller told the dispatcher that the man covered his Jeep and placed an ammunition can and other objects on the ground, police said.The man, who police say has an "affiliation" with the military, was armed with a rifle and made non-threatening verbal statements while pacing in the parking lot, according to investigators. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESDelaware State Police troopers and officers from the University of Delaware and the Delaware Department of Transportation also responded to the scene. Investigators say the suspect was spotted disassembling his rifle, at which point officers noticed that he was also armed with a handgun. Officers ordered the man to lay on the ground and took him into custody, police said.

INDIANAPOLIS - Republican lawmakers in Indiana voted Tuesday to override the GOP governor’s veto of a bill banning transgender females from competing in girls school sports and join about more than a dozen other states adopting similar laws in the past two years.State senators voted 32-15 in favor of overriding Gov. PHILADELPHIA - Authorities say three people were killed in two different shooting that happened minutes apart Wednesday afternoon in Philadelphia. Officers from the Philadelphia Police Department were called to the 3000 block of Ella street just before 2 p.m. for reports of a shooting. Police say a 44-year-old man was shot at least seven times and a 40-year-old man suffered a lethal gunshot wound to the head. The younger victim was pronounced dead on the scene and the second victim was taken to Temple University Hospital where he died, police said. Minutes later, in Philadelphia's Nicetown-Tioga section were called to the 1600 block of West Erie Avenue where police say a 20-year-old man was shot to death. The victim, whose name has not been reported, was pronounced dead at the scene. AdvertisementNo arrests have been reported in either deadly shooting.

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - Bucks County officials announce an arrest of a 56-year-old man in connection with in an April 1991 cold case homicide.Robert Atkins, a 56-year-old man from Falls Township, in Bucks County, voluntarily turned himself in to Bucks County officials, after a "tireless" investigation by Bucks County Detectives and a recommendation by a grand jury.Atkins is charged with one count of first degree murder, one count of second degree murder, two counts of robbery and seven counts of arson in a case dating to 1991.Officials stated the grand jury concluded that Atkins murdered 35-year-old Joy Hibbs on April 19, 1991, at her home in Croydon. She had been stabbed repeatedly and was likely asphyxiated. Bucks County District Attorney Matt Weintraub explained, during a press conference, Hibbs’ autopsy indicated there was no smoke in her lungs, indicating she had been murdered before the fire of her home being set.Joy Hibbs with her children.
