Pfizer halts distribution of anti-smoking drug Chantix, after finding carcinogen

Smoking cigarette LOS ANGELES - Pfizer Inc. announced on July 16 that it would pause distribution of its anti-smoking drug, Chantix, amid recent findings that it contains high levels of cancer-causing agents called nitrosamines in the medication.

According to Pfizer, nitrosamines are common in water and foods and that most consumers are exposed to the chemical at some level."These impurities may increase the risk of cancer if people are exposed to them above acceptable levels over long periods of time," the company said in a press release.
