Officials: One victim killed in North Wildwood house fire

NORTH WILDWOOD, NJ. - North Wildwood fire crews responded to a house fire that caused one fatality on Thursday afternoon.Authorities say fire crews responded to a reported structure fire at 2203 New York Avenue at 4:16 p.m., and police officers on the scene informed them of a potential victim trapped inside. Firefighters on scene described the structure as a 1 ½ story residence with smoke and fire showing. Fire crews initiated an aggressive interior fire attack as a search for people began and firefighters found a victim in a rear bedroom after four minutes, according to officials.Authorities say firefighters evacuated the victim through a window, then moved them to a stretcher and initiated CPR. The victim was then transported by ambulance to Cape Regional Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead at 5:05 p.m. No additional injuries were reported. Officials say the fire was placed under control around 4:30 p.m. The Cape May County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating. This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

STONE HARBOR, N.J. - A local girl is recovering from what officials believe to be a shark bite she suffered while surfing along the Jersey coast days before beachgoers head to the water for the unofficial start of summer.Maggie Drozdowski, 15, said she was surfing with a friend off the beach near 109th Street in Stone Harbor when she felt something wrap around her foot and try to tug her under. "I felt something around my foot, and it pulled me down a little bit," Maggie said. "I shook my leg as hard as I could to get it off, but it just wouldn't." Maggie credits her 3 millimeter wetsuit for giving her enough protection to keep the suspected shark from inflicting much more serious injuries. "I went over the wave and she went under it, she screamed and I turned around because I thought she was drowning or something, but she got up and she said ‘I think something bit me," said Sarah O’Donnell, a friend who was with Maggie during the attack. Medics were called to the beach and rushed Maggie to Cape May Regional Medical Center for treatment that included six stitches.

SEA ISLE, N.J. - Officials say a rescue operation is now a recovery operation for a worker trapped under a concrete balcony that collapsed at an apartment building in Sea Isle City. Emergency crews responded to the building on the boardwalk between 36th and 37th streets around 2:20 p.m. for reports of a collapse.Officer Jim McQuillen from the Sea Isle City Police Department said two construction workers were on the 8th floor when the balcony collapsed onto a worker on the 7th floor. Cape May County Urban Search and Rescue Team member Matt Johnson estimated the balcony weighs between 11,000 and 15,000 pounds, causing structural concerns. The two workers on the upper floor were treated for minor injuries, according to police.

PHILADELPHIA - A third person has been arrested and charged in connection with chaos that erupted at an unsanctioned car rally in Wildwood. Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland and Wildwood Police Department Chief Robert Regalbuto announced the arrest of 18-year-old Zion Diaz of Hammonton, New Jersey, on Wednesday. Cape May officials identify pedestrian killed in weekend crash

CAPE MAY, N.J. - Authorities in Cape May, New Jersey have identified a woman who died after she was struck by a driver over the weekend. Around 4:15 p.m. Sunday, Cape May police responded to a report of an erratic driver when an officer observed a crash on the 500 block of Lafayatte Street. Police say a 51-year-old driver of a 2011 Nissan Pathfinder struck a pedestrian, later identified as 63-year-old Eva Wolfe.

Ocean City police officer charged with stalking after tracking device found on car, prosecutors say

CAPE MAY, N.J. - An Ocean City Police Officer is on administrative leave after authorities say someone found a tracking device on their car that was connected to the officer. Jacob Harris, 32, was arrested and charged with a fourth-degree count of stalking, the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office said on Friday. Harris, an Egg Harbor resident, was released on a summons pending court proceedings. MORE HEADLINES: Officers from the Lower Township Police Department were called to a home Wednesday night after a person allegedly found a tracking device on their vehicle, investigators said. The device was later found to be connected to Harris, according to police. Coast Guard rescues 7 people off Cape May coast

CAPE MAY, N.J. - The Coast Guard rescued seven people from a sport fishing boat, which struggled in the weather on Sunday. The group of people were discovered approximately 69 miles southeast of Cape May. The initial report came in at 1:19 and stated that a 40-foot sport fishing boat had been beset by weather and were struggling in sea that reached up to approximately 10 feet. A small craft advisory was issued for the area and indicated 4-to-6-foot seas with winds gusting up to 30 knots. Great white shark, Breton, tracked off coast of Cape May by researchers
