PHILADELPHIA - Pickleball, a seemingly innocuous paddle sport that has exploded in popularity over the recent years, has become a major nuisance in one Philadelphia neighborhood.

Residents who live across the street from the pickleball courts at the Water Tower Recreation Center in Chestnut Hill say they're fed up with the constant popping of balls being hit.

Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic gripped the city, the pickleball courts have become a safe and fun outdoor activity. Players say pickleball appeals to a wide range of people, from young and spry to older and less mobile.

But even the players will admit that pickleball isn't always the quietest sport. The pickleball courts at Water Tower Recreation Center sit just across the street from perturbed residents. "I think there is some a validity to it," Jude Brandt said. "I mean, it is noisier than tennis and I think the dialogue between the players and residents is important." The community met on Monday to try to find a compromise.

PHILADELPHIA - A 17-year-old has died after he was shot outside of a store in Southwest Philadelphia, police say. According to authorities, the shooting happened on the corner of Buist Avenue and S 61st Street. Police say officers and fire medics arrived on scene and found the teenager suffering from gunshot wounds to the head. Medics rushed him to Penn Presbyterian Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1:06 a.m., according to authorities. PHILADELPHIA - An off-duty police officer was carjacked at gunpoint early Friday morning and the car was found on fire. Chief Inspector Scott Small says the carjacking happened around 12:15 a.m., officers with the 12th District responded to numerous calls for a carjacking, shots fired and an auto accident at the intersection of 56th and Pentridge Streets in Kingsessing. When police arrived on scene, they found an off-duty officer who said he was parking his Silver 2020 Toyota Highlander when a suspect with a gun stopped him, reached into his pockets to grab his keys and then stole his vehicle, authorities say. Small says the off-duty officer fired his gun, but it remains unclear if the carjacking suspect was shot. According to police, the suspect then crashed the off-duty officer's car into unattended parked cars and then continued going north on 56th Street. Hours later, a car was found burning in West Philadelphia and it was identified as the officer's car.
