MORRISVILLE, N.C. - A 23-year-old man died Friday afternoon after he jumped or fell out of a plane before it made an emergency landing at Raleigh-Durham International Airport in North Carolina.Authorities said the pilot called air traffic control about an hour before making the emergency landing and said the plane had lost its right wheel."Emergency, we’ve lost our right wheel," the pilot told air traffic controllers. WASHINGTON - A recent report from researchers at the University of Massachusetts-Boston found that rising inflation has made it difficult for millions of elderly Americans to afford basic needs. The report published in the university’s Elder Index states that half of older women as well as 45% of older men who live alone are classified as living under federal poverty standards.The index accounts for health care, food, housing and transportation costs. In 2020, the index found that 2 million senior couples were considered "financially insecure" based on their incomes compared with the cost of living. Despite these alarming findings, the cost of living isn’t going down.Inflation surged in June and workers' average wages accelerated in the spring — signs that Americans won't likely feel any relief from rising prices anytime soon and that the Federal Reserve will feel compelled to raise borrowing costs further.An inflation gauge closely tracked by the Fed jumped 6.8% in June from a year ago, the government said Friday, the biggest such jump in four decades. PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney reacted to the news of two police officers being shot at Fourth of July festivities and says he's looking forward to the time he will no longer lead the city. On Monday, a large police presence responded to the 2500 block of Spring Garden Street where a massive crowd gathered to watch Jason Derulo performing at the Wawa Welcome America concert and firework show, authorities say. According to officials, a Philadelphia police officer assigned to highway patrol was grazed in the head and another officer, who was a member of the Montgomery County bomb squad, was shot in the shoulder. Both officers were taken to Jefferson University Hospital, where they were treated before being released, says Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw. The gunfire caused the massive crowd of spectators to scatter in the middle of the fireworks show, causing chaos and confusion as people began running. Two police officers suffered non-fatal gunshot wounds when gunfire erupted at a large 4th of July fireworks display in Philadelphia.Kenney and Outlaw spoke to reporters outside of Jefferson Hospital about the incident and gun violence in Philadelphia. Kenney said the day was going smooth at first and described the event as "laid back" and "chill" before shooting began. "[The] weather was beautiful.
